Another Carawagon!

Post by RMS » Thu Jul 12, 2018 8:52 pm

Hi,

Here's the latest addition to my stable :gold:

Image

I picked it up today from Dave (dpaz on here) and drove it 100 miles home.

I am quite liking the 2.5NAD - runs out of puff a bit on motorway inclines, but was still doing nearly 50mph at the top of Windy Hill on the M62 (Shaw to Saddleworth), just dropping out of overdrive near the top.
If I can sort out the 'heavy breathing', or at least put up with it with a catch tank, I might keep this engine in the vehicle for now.
If not, I've got a spare 200TDi or 300TDi I could drop in.

A slight problem with the brakes on the way home, but backing off the master cylinder pushrod to give a bit more play seemed to do the trick.

It won't take too much work to get it ready for use - replacing some of the roof woodwork which has delaminated and fitting a cooker to the back door (I've got a spare Dudley which I got to replace a modern one in one of my projects).
The double seat base could do with re-covering, the seams had split and are held together with duct tape, and the awning frame needs replacing as the old poles had seized in the roof (luckily I know someone who makes them  )

Then possibly a bit of door work, window runners and re-painting, and she'll be good as new :neener:

Another 5 door Carawagon Continental on the road - not too many of those around :tiphat:

Cheers,
Robin.

Can't have too many campers Robin... :gold:

Is that checkered plate on the bonnet a cover plate for a hole for a snorkel? Some of the original old snorkels were fitted to the bonnet rather then the top of the wing...

Hi Michiel,

Maybe just another one, an ambulance perhaps

No, the chequerplate isn't covering a hole. I think it's there as a step to get to the roof before the roofrack was fitted, perhaps for cleaning

Notice the handle on the front of the bonnet - Patrick worked out today that it was there to pull yourself up onto the bumper, toolbox and wing, all of which have chequerplate, so a previous owner certainly liked climbing

Hi Nice to see her being loved. The checkerplate was to save the wings when putting things in the rack and yes the handle on the bonnet was to pull me up. Enjoy

Well, a year on and I decided it was time to sort this one out.

New wood, new seals and roof painted and replaced.

Here are the two side pieces I removed, or rather, as they fell off!

The previous owner thought he'd bought marine ply!
A lesson for everyone that just because the seller says it is marine ply, doesn't mean to say it really is!!

Time to start painting the rest, I think, and tidying up the interior.

HI Robin,

Looking good.

How are you going to decide which one
to use.

I think I'll wait until I've got a few more on the road, then decide which two to keep as they are all different layouts.
It's always good to have a spare
