Insurance companies now accepting campers?

Post by Peaceand » Sat Oct 12, 2013 12:17 pm

I'm doing the usual ring around for insurance prices again, and this year not one of them hesitated at the prospect of a camper, fitted gas or an updated engine. The only company that actually wouldn't cover me was due to me being under 30 years of age

I'll do a post with all the prices and notes when I've finished getting the quotes - some of them are open on Saturdays but still need to refer multi-car policies to their underwriters during office hours.

Has anybody else tried to get insurance in the last month or so and been turned down based on it being a Caramobile, Dormawagon or similar?

Sorry Patrick - I thought I'd mentioned I'd just renewed mine.

RH again - I've dropped down to one Carawagon on the policy until I'm ready to get another on the road.

With agreed value at £8k, parked on the drive (or front lawn  ) with European breakdown (recovery to home), legal cover and green card it comes out at £81.

The renewal for two Carawagons (both agreed at £8k with same terms & benefits) on the same policy came through at £145.

No, however I found they are offering classic camper insurance now, not classic Land Rover. Over the last year S2C (me and Alan) have done a load of work getting them factory recognised by the insurance peeps. The side effect is of course that they go on a different policy, though not necessarily any more expensive. The only problem I had was expensive multi car policies, although Indisnt need it this year anyway. Remember that location, history, on or off-road storage/ garage etc have a massive effect on price. I am with Heritage this year. A great company to deal with.

Mine didn't bother at all. I told them what it was, that it had a gas cooker in it and they were absolutely fine with it!

It only seemed to be a problem for the last couple of years when most of the well known Classic insurers suddenly didn't know what Carawagons and Dormobiles were :thud:
There didn't seem to be any problems before, or more recently (probably helped by Dan & Alan intervention) and I never had a problem with RH even during that period.

The only stipulation RH made was that I have to carry a fire extinguisher because of the cooker.
