Your dad was a military man, but I doubt that he ever flew into RAF Sharjah (a few miles from Dubai).
The nearest toilet block to the MT Section did not have partitions between the thrones ... if you didn't have a newspaper you could read the bloke's sitting next to you. (You youngsters haven't lived).
There were two ways of approaching this building ... nonchalantly, pick up a bog roll on the way in, go down to the far end, where it was dark.
But if things were a bit fraught (quite common in the Middle East) you would approach at a run, adjusting your shorts on the way. Drop onto the nearest throne, and sit there until the emergency was over. Look round ... all the bog rolls were in a pile ... at the dark end.
Sharjah ... crazy place. Lying on my bed one evening when an RAF policeman came in, looking for a friend of Sparky, the electrician.
"Come with me!"
"Why, what's he done!"
"He's drunk, riding a bike up and down the runway, being chased by another
Snowdrop in a Land Rover".
"So?"
"There's a Britannia up there ... wants to land!"
