That did mean that the axle was a long way back making it a little front-heavy, but it also made it very stable at up to 70mph

I've just got to get it off the trailer now and onto another bit of the garden
This is when I wish I had a forklift as it's one thing lifting it on concrete, but it's another trying to do it on soft ground

Oh, and I've just worked out the fuel consumption - 33mpg with empty trailer (but with 3 big bags of wood on the rear just to spoil the aerodynamics and our big top box) and 29mpg fully laden.
That's with varying speeds from 50-60+mph both ways.

I did remove the ammo box from the front bumper on the way back up and noticed there was more power available and the temp gauge was a lot more steady, so I think I need a smaller box or find somewhere else for the jack, oils, rope etc. to free up the rad and intercooler

Hey Neil, I have thought about it

Someone not a million miles away told me about a forklift someone was selling for £500 - unfortunately (or fortunately!) it had already gone, but I was tempted.

With a big enough one, you can even use it as a vehicle lift for working underneath

We were talking about this the other day - Patrick & I were clearing plant life (climbing hydrangea) from our flat roof (concrete, not timber) and I said that if we had got someone in to do it, they would have had scaffolding up, with guard rails and kick boards rather than just a ladder like us

I remember re-felting and re-tiling our first house roof, way, way back in the late 70s - two stories up a Victorian high-ceiling house with no floors in the house and a cellar - that must have been 40' from the ridge to cellar

Never gave it a thought - just got on with it with a long ladder and roof ladder

Without wishing to pour a dampener on it, working in the Construction Industry as I do and being professional obligated to current H&S regulations... Falls from height is still one of the biggest killers of Building Contractors in the UK, it is always alright until it goes wrong. Whereas like me you have the choice of whether you risk your own neck or not, it really isn't worth killing yourself over... Anyway, lecture over

I'm not knocking the modern H&S rules and regs Dan, just saying that most folk, even builders, back in the 70s worked off ladders and I've no doubt many lives have been saved since.
I was just pointing out that no one thought anything of it then, including me

Just an update on this one - no further work done since I got it home, though I neglected to mention in this thread that I've got a 1958 LWB truck cab and a new Galv chassis ready, so it's just a matter of weather and time now.

I' visited the DVLA today to get the registration changed on the '58 - it had a 1963 plate on it as the original had been transferred off years ago (and is currently on a Renault Scenic!).
It's now got a 'proper' 3+3 plate

which dvla did you go to?

I will be doing the new dormobile soon as it is on a 1974 plate instead of a 1965 (honest!)

Hi Alex,

It was the Leeds one - a brand new building on a business estate, East of Leeds.

I think the building helps the staff stay happy - it's all stainless steel and windows - very clean - nothing like the dire offices on Eastgate where they used to be.
I can remember queuing out of the door in the rain at that one

Postcode is LS15 9JQ though that would be a fair distance for you, I would have thought, unless you're over that way anyway (like I was today)
