Dormobile roof aperture dimensions
I'm getting a bit closer to fitting (with a lot of help for sure) my Dormobile roof kindly supplied by AlexB. The metal aperture frame needs replacing as it only has 3 sides - the fourth one rusted away so I need to know the dimensions of the aperture so I can get the angle grinder out and/or the dimensions of the frame and what it is made up of - seems to be angle iron with a flap at each end? Pics would also help including some of the support pieces which extend to the gutters on the inside of the roof. Thank you in advance guys.

Hi John,
grumpycolin has done a conversion last year. I'm sure he has the whole guide to put the roof on from Dormobile. Didn't he sent you some pics allready some time ago?

Yes I've got all the photos Michiel but need the physical dimensions so I can have a new frame made up.

Ah, ok. Colin presumably still has the fitting instructions. I shall ask tomorrow as he lives local (ish) to me and see if we can measure it up for you and I can scan the fitting instructions and mail them to you. We got a very nice scanner at work that will make light work of scanning the lot.
Can you give me your email in a pm?

Re: Dormobile roof aperture dimensions
Hi john,
Spoken to Colin. The two oposite profiles of the aperture are the same, so the left and right are the same and the front and rear are the same. I don't know which one you need to replace. The only difference between the front and rear profile are the holes for the struts that keep the roof open, they will be on oposite sides. He will look for the instructions and when he finds it, I can scan them in and mail it to you. He did mentioned that the first cut you need to make is the rear one and that is 11 inches from the rear edge of the Landrover roof.
Hope this makes sense...
Cheers,
Michiel

Re: Dormobile roof aperture dimensions
OK Michiel understand all that - one long side of the frame is missing entirely and the opposite short sides have rusted to the extent that I don't know how long they should be so I can fashion a replacement.

Ah, ok. See your prediciment now.
Alternatively you could get in contact with Dormobile and ask measurements for those parts. They also sell a replacement roof frame for £255. They sell loads of parts, but sometimes at some handsome prices.
I will chase Colin for the manual. There might be measurements in there. I can measure mine maybe tomorrow, although I might not have full access to the whole frame. Cabinets and roof lining gets in the way...

Re: Dormobile roof aperture dimensions
I have measured the aperture for the roof. It is approx. 42" x 67.5" and starts 7" (not 11) measured from the rear edge of the Landrover roof. I measured on the inside, so I am probably a few mill out. These are approximations as it is difficult to measure with the roof closed. I can't open the roof at the moment due to the colder temperatures. This has to do with the age of the canvas. Don't want to chance it unnessesary to rip the canvas.
I also know that Colin has cut his aperture too far to the front as now the rear edge of the glasfibre roof catches on the Landrover roof. There should be a 1 cm+ gap between the Dromobile roof and the Landrover roof when in closed position.
Then the roof falls nicely in the glasfibre gutter that goes on the rear of your Landrover roof.
Hope this helps a little???
Cheers,
Michiel

Now we're getting somewhere! Thanks Michiel, that's the measurement I was after, even if it's approximate. Yes I saw that Dormobile will supply one for £225!

Re: Dormobile roof aperture dimensions
It is quite steep for 4 bits of metal.
Do you have a spare roof you are using to convert or are you using your freshly painted pristine roof currently on the Landy?
If you got a spare one off the car, it works a lot easier than mounted to the car.
But as always, measure a million times and cut once...
The rear cut is the first one you need to measure and mark out and work from there, that is what Colin told me.
