My latest project came with an original metal front roof rack, but I like the look of the original wood racks.

As I replace all the woodwork anyway, I put the wooden rack back on each one that I've done, and will do.
I do make it a little longer than original though, so it's almost as long as the metal ones.

You might be able to just see Steve's 'stubby' wooden rack under the metal one with a box, and then the wooden one on Patrick's in this picture.

Here's another picture showing the size compared to the military one:

In fact, you might be able to see on the last picture that I made the one on mine even longer than the one on Patrick's

Just got to remember not to put full jerry cans on the front of the rack :aaagh:

I am considering ditching mine, as drag is the enemy of fuel consumption.... I could mount the spare wheel on the back door and the reduction in storage would stop me overloading for my trip as weight is also the enemy of fuel consumption :gold:

Holly, as we made the top slats removable, it should sit nicely just above the two 'horns'. I always worry about putting heavy things up there, and I'd like somewhere to sit with a good view too.

The wooden ones remind me of the drying rack I have above the aga.

Certainly reckon that with a bit of skill in the woodworking department, you could adapt it so you could put your washing up on one so it would dry as you go along.

You mean like this :neener:

Notice that we could hang washing under our rack, but the Dormi has to have a line to another vehicle - not easy to keep it in line when you're driving like that though

I find the expedition rack on mine invaluable especially when going away for a camping trip, I keep all sorts up there, the oz tent, table + benches, folding chairs, sleeping bags +pillows, fishing rods and occasionally the boat :gold:

It means that you can keep the inside of the vehicle reasonably free of clutter so you can use the stove etc when you stop for a pit stop. I also find it makes no difference to the car's performance whether it's fully loaded or empty, but it does have a 3.3 litre straight six fitted which pulls rather nicely

I've always fancied a full rack like that Jerry.

Looks like you've got loads of extra storage there
