Carawagon on Australian Gumtree, Victoria

Post by RMS » Fri Nov 28, 2014 5:49 pm

Brought to my attention by Phillip

HERE

This says it's an original 1964 Carawagon - looks very nice but apart from the roof I'm not convinced it is original

Bulkhead still in place and it looks to me like a DIY job with the windows and the inside.

What do you think?

Cheers,
Robin.

MY roof (should be 1964 as well) has different (rectangular) windows.

Side windows are recangular and small as usual for carawagons on the offside.
Nearside mine are completely different, greenhouse style.

So id guess 1963 chassis and body + later carawagon roof.

But nicely made, though.

Exactly - your side windows are Carawagon style, the same as Searle used on 2 door Series Carawagons right until they finished, as far as I know.

Your roof windows are the early ones - I think Calum has the same in his Carawagon - aluminium frame outside screwed to a wooden frame on the inside of the roof (better design, in my opinion, than the later 'windscreen rubber' fittings on mine!).

You also have the removed bulkhead and the Searle cupboards and bed, incorporating the front seats so there's still standing room at the back with the bed made up.

As you say, nicely made but looks like to me a DIY conversion with a real Carawagon roof - does that make it a Carawagon? Does it matter, other than it could be "Not as described" if a buyer was expecting an original Searle Carawagon

Cheers,
Robin.

Oh, i might be misunderstood !

In my opinion it is NOT a real carawagon, but a standard 109 with a carawagon roof.

I cant tell if the "wheel arches" are carawagon style, either. The fridge(?) is positioned, as if there would be the standard "wheel bench" behind, but
